NY State Does Not Mandate De-escalation Training


New investigative article from APM Reports reveals the importance of de-escalation training for police departments. This training helps police officers handle crisis situations without the use of deadly force. This crisis management is especially helpful in situations where police are responding to people with mental illness or who are suicidal.

Even though the benefits of this training are clear and well-known, the report details how many states do not mandate this training, leaving it up to local police departments to decide. New York State is one of the states that does not mandate this type of training state-wide.

This training is important and can save lives. New York State should mandate this training state-wide.
